Helloooooo!

It has been a few days since I blogged…there’s been lots of drama and issues that needed immediate attention, and well, though I was inspired to write I have not posted any of those pieces. Maybe later.

For now, I’ll talk about Saturday night’s event and how much fun I had! (I’m starting to realize that I should blog immediately after I figure out what the topic will be, because a few days later my mind seems hazy).

I volunteered for the Pilar’s ball that took place at the Westin hotel in Lombard/Yorktown and my job was being a Blackjack dealer playing with chips for charity donations- not real cash (since you can’t gamble in Illinois, ugh).

Blackjack is the only game I actually play when I’m in Vegas, a cruise, or some other chance to be in a casino, though I have to admit I’m nowhere near a professional. So today was a good chance to learn the game from the dealer’s point of view, and actually learn what a ’split’ and ‘double-down’ mean!!! Whenever I play, I just keep it safe without including the fancy twists.

There was a 5 minute training session (eek) and then I claimed my table and waited for the first victim to arrive. Little did I know, the victim would be me once my table filled with an entire entourage of drunken, wealthy, fun group of friends. This was an older and wealthier crowd, so for them to play for fun – and charity- was not unheard of.

They kept me busy with answering their humorous questions about my pretty manicure color, and how my name matched his wife’s name (who was sitting at the Poker table), drinks were getting spilled, cards revealed, and the minutes went by so fast! Somewhere along the way my players were informed that we’re all volunteers, and hence not getting paid, and they tipped me $40. That was a nice and unexpected surprise for an unemployed amateur Blackjack dealer! haha

I could see myself doing this for a living (after I practice counting the card values a bit faster than I do now), but the only problem is the nearest casino in Illinois is the Elgin boat! Not exactly too many jobs available in this market. But I could totally see myself doing this for real.

Moral of the story: try something new, volunteer for an event and learn a new skill along the way, you might even leave forty dollars richer!
