Why Duke Needs to Take a Lesson From Syracuse

Road to the ACC Championship

The tournaments have begun and as can be expected there have been plenty of upsets in tournament play. Perhaps the biggest upset to date in the tournaments happened in the Big East tournament.  Georgetown took down Syracuse and knocked out the number one seed and that should be enough to make the other top seeds, namely Duke, take notice.

Virginia vs. Duke

Duke can really learn a lesson from Syracuse. They lost to Georgetown and looked bad in the process. They did have some injuries to players during the game but it was the Hoyas that played with urgency and deserved to win that game. Virginia came out and played the same way against Boston College and wiped the floor with them as a 5 point underdog. Now they are almost 17 point underdogs (view latest line here) against Duke, will Duke get upset?

Not likely while Virginia played well against the Eagles, the Blue Devils are much better than the Eagles and Coach K will make sure that his kids are aware of the other teams that got upset. i would not be surprised if he used Syracuse or Uconn as a shining example.

Duke has dominated the Cavs in the most recent meetings and it has not even been close. The Dukies are rested and will get the Cavs in a back to back spot. The Cavs got 30 rebounds against the Eagles and the Blue Devils will be tougher on the boards. The Cavaliers are 3-8-2 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games and 6-13 ATS in their last 19 games following a ATS win. The Blue Devils are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games and the favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

I don’t like to back double digit favorites but this one is warranted.

Bet On: Duke -16.5

Weekend Betting? 12-14th March

As another big sporting weekend comes upon us, where is the value from a betting perspective? I think Scotland have a good chance to beat England at Murrayfield. They have beaten the English the last three times they played at Murrayfield and they will be hugely motivated. They are generally 10% better when they play the olod enemy in any case.. Expect an arm wrestle in this one as free flowing champagne rugby will not be on the menu. Although the value is not exactly huge with the Scots between 2 and 2.5/1. It may be prudent to back Scotland +4 on the handicap as a close encounter surely awaits.
The only other team that offers any value this weekend is Wales at 4/1 and we won’t go down that road. What about Brian O’Driscoll to score a try on his 100th cap at 15/8?? It is written.
France are 100/1 on so won’t be going down that route either.

What about Everton, Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and England -4 @ 30/1???

Premiership? Arsenal were excellent mid-week but a trip north against a struggling Hull team without Cesc might be worth a punt on the draw at 4/1.

Playoff Bound Hawks and Trailblazers will Cover - use the Chalk!

Three games in the NBA tonight on TNT Thursday.  People continue to be looking for underdogs to back, where we usually find value, but don’t forget we’re in the playoff stretch.  Motivations are dramatically different and the Chalk is going to begin to win out.  When you put a playoff bound team on the road and take away a few points for them to cover, the spreads are just where we want them to be for the favorites.  I like two such games tonight.

Take Atlanta Hawks -7 at Washington Wizards. The Boston Celtics have been doing their part to let the Atlanta Hawks move into the 3rd spot in the East, but Mike Woodson’s team has been hesitant to take control.  The Hawks have lost the first 2 games of this 3 game road trip.  The skid started when they gave up a 12 point lead to the Heat in Miami, then they played an inferior game in New York where they were unable to sink a game winning shot as time expired.  So, why expect the Hawks to win tonight?  The Hawks haven’t lost 3 games in a row in over two months and that streak was started by two beat-downs from the then healthy Cleveland Cavaliers.  The Hawks are a solid playoff team – clearly one of the top four teams in the East – and the Wizards are a perfect team to use in getting things back on track.  The Hawks have beat the Wizards in both prior meetings this year (both games in Atlanta) by 11 points and 6 points, and that was much more talented Wizards team.  This Wizards team has lost 4 in a row, including the first game of this homestand where they were beaten by the Rockets 96-88.   The Hawks are a better team than the Rockers. The Wizards have only won ATS at Home 38% of the time this year; the Hawks have won  ATS 56% of the time on the Road.   Take the Hawks -7.

Take Portland Trailblzaers -5 1/2 at Golden State Warriors. Have you noticed that the Portland Trailblazers are trying to end the debate about who will be in the playoffs from the West.  Even with Memphis occasionally playing well (like last night in Boston), Portland has pulled 3 1/2 games ahead (the Rockets and Hornets are barely in the discussion).  In fact, Portland is now within striking distance of the three clubs ahead of them (Oklahoma City, Phoenix, and San Antonio).  The Blazers are 4-1 in their last 5, losing only on the Nuggets home court.  They are 4-2 SU and ATS in their last 6 Road Games (where they have beat the spread 65% of the time this season).  They are meeting a Golden State Warriors team that has to be admired for the grit and determination they revealed with a 5 game road trip back East where they could barely put 8 players on the court – even though they lost all 5 games.  Monta Ellis may suit up for this one, but the team is still injured and not at full strength.  The first game home is always a tough one, particularly when the road trip was long and difficult.     The Warriors did beat the Trailblazers in Oakland back in November as a 7 1/2 point underdog.  Then when they played in Portland in January, the Trailblazers won by 16 points.  That’s the Portland team they will face tonight.  The Warriors are 4-5 at Home since Feb. 1, beating only one playoff team in the bunch (Atlanta).  They lost to 4 playoff teams (and Philadelphia) by 8 or more points (3 double-digit losses).  Take the Trailblazers -5 1/2 .

Betting regulation in the spotlight: this is just mad

In what can only be described as a puzzling turn of events, UEFA banned Lyon from carrying their shirt sponsor – online betting operator BetClic – in last night’s Champions League tie, despite Spanish laws making it perfectly legal for them to do so.

Their opponents Real Madrid, sponsored by online betting firm bwin, display the logo week in week out in Spanish football and did so again last night, prompting bewilderment as to why their French visitors were banned from doing the same.

The double standards on display angered BetClic Chief Executive Nicolas Beraud and Lyon chairman Jean-Michael Aulas, who issued a joint-statement before the match criticizing UEFA’s actions, stating that since the tie was being played in Spain, where advertising of online-betting is permitted, the order had “no legal basis.”

Despite fundamental EU laws aimed at ensuring the freedom of cross-border trade and services, several member states continue to ban legal EU betting firms from their territories, while allowing local monopolies to offer the exact same services to their citizens.

Right2bet, an organization fighting for the rights of consumers to bet with whichever licensed EU operator they choose, has constantly offered opposition to what it believes are the unlawful actions of certain governments, and UEFA’s intervention has left them surprised.

Right2bet spokesman Ari Last said: “Last night’s farcical situation in Madrid highlights the inconsistent and illogical regulatory environment that currently exists within the EU regarding online betting.

“The Champions League represents everything that is wonderful about cross-border integration and competition in the EU, and we can’t understand why UEFA imposed the restriction upon Lyon last night.

“We share the grievances of BetClic and Lyon in regard to this decision.”

Never before have I seen anything quite so obviously wrong. Something has to be done. Start off now by signing the right2bet petition.

Yayaa’s Picks: Take Boston College to Cover

It keeps getting worse for Virginia. Not only is their leading scorer Sylven Landesberg (32 min./& 17 points/game) out for the season, but they announced Senior (G) Calvin Baker is also now out for the season, further depleting the Cav’s at the guard position.  Thats 21 points and 32 minutes per game they have to find.  Virginia has lost 9 in a row in the conference and was defeated by this Boston College squad by 13 points a week ago.  BC has a few quality wins in the conference this year but they are an up and down squad.  Virginia is just a down squad, although they fought Maryland tough after getting blown out early; as much Maryland falling asleep and letting them back in the game.

I live in Boston and BC plays up to the opponent and in this situation the opponent is The Big East Tourney in NYC.  Depth, a better offense, and their ability to play tough in the right situation has me on BC here.  After a loss to NC State last outing Coach Al Skinner said, “We did a terrible job defensively.”  Have to think he will use that to get the BC squad in the right frame of mind in the opening round.  BC is a decent FT team down the stretch and you have to think up the tempo game will get Virginia in foul trouble furthering their depth problems. Virginia is a beaten team and if BC gets their average 70 points we will coast to another winning ticket.  Virginia is going nowhere, early wake up call to lose 10th in a row.  BC still has a heart beat.  Pick: BC -5

Blaze’s Picks: Take Oklahoma State -7

I am going to lay the points with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. These 2 Big 12 teams split the regular season but that was a long time ago Oklahoma beat the cowboys back in January in over time  and a month later the Cowboys completely destroyed them.

The sliding Sooner’s are coming in to this game on a 8 game skid. They have lost a key player in Willie Warren and his 16 ppg.  The coach of the Sooners has lost confidence in the team as a whole.   Crocker put it this way: “We have good chemistry like guys are friends. But I guess on the court we didn’t mix very well.  “I’ve done a poor job. I’ve always felt one of my strengths is being able to figure out what buttons to push and how to get the best out of guys. I haven’t been able to do that this year. It’s been frustrating to me.

Oklahoma 4-12 in conference play  1-4 on  a neutral court.

Oklahoma State
9-7 in conference play  3-1  on a neutral court.

Oklahoma State comes into this Big 12 tourney with wins in 5 of their last 7 to move to 21-9 for the season – and likely an at-large bid come Sunday – but a convincing win tonight would get them firmly off the fence, and into the Dance for sure, and OU is a willing opponent this evening.

I look for The Cowboys to Blow out the Sooners in this one.  Take  Oklahoma State -7
