10 Commandments of Wagering

The difference between betting on, say, baseball, which utilizes a run line, and football, which employs a pointspread, is as different as the shapes and sizes of the balls used in those two games. That being said, there are a number of handicapping and betting principles that apply to all sports wagering. At the risk of being irreverent, let's call them the 10 Commandments of Wagering:

1-THOU SHALT NOT BET MORE THAN THY CAN AFFORD TO LOSE
Like any book, The Greek Sportsbook wants you to bet. But only bankruptcy attorneys and psychiatrists benefit when a player goes bust. You're no good to yourself or us if you lose everything. Gambling can be an enjoyable pastime, if you wager responsibly.

II-THOU SHALT RESPECT THE LINE
Bad oddsmakers don't last very long so the ones that are still around must be very proficient. A good spread should give you pause, make you wonder whether to lay or take the points. If something looks to good to be true, look again. The oddsmaker isn't a fool; but maybe you are.

III-HONOR THY BANKROLL
Learn to manage your money. This means not stepping out on a game just because it's on television. Don't try to "get even" on the last game of the day. Be mature enough to realize that you're going to lose some days and win others. You can't make every day a winner but you can make every day a loser.

IV-THOU SHALT NOT OVEREMPHASIZE TECHNICAL TRENDS
A team that has covered 10 straight times against an opponent is no more or less likely to cover in Game No. 11 than it is for "tails" to come up in a coin toss after 10 consecutive "heads." History can add perspective but it's an imprecise indicator of what will happen in the future. Many so-called "trends" merely are the result of "backfitting," the manufacture of a theory to validate a set of numbers, rather than developing a theory and seeing whether the statistical data supports it.

V-THOU SHALT NOT ASSIGN TOO MUCH IMPORTANCE TO PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS
Odds are, if one team is up for a game, so is its opponent. Besides, an excess of adrenaline is not always helpful, especially in sports where finesse plays as big a role as brute force. Since an athlete only can give everything he has, a "110% effort" is impossible. So is "taking it to another level." If athletes or teams could play better just by trying harder, wouldn't they do that all the time? Talent, cohesiveness (team play) and coaching still are the most important factors in winning.

VI-THOU SHALT NOT LAST GAME HANDICAP
No team is as good as it looks after a victory nor as woeful as it seems after a defeat. While recent form is important, the spectrum needs to be widened to evaluate each team as a whole. In fact, the week after a football team is embarrassed, it's not only likely to practice harder, but to also to encounter an overconfident opponent. On the other cleat, a team that wins in a blowout may develop a false sense of worth. Remember, the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots lost their season opener to the Buffalo Bills by a 30-0 score last year, a result that was anything but a harbinger of things to come that season.

VII-THOU SHALT UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF INJURIES
A good general rule is this: The more starters on a team, the less important an injury. Thus, football, with it nearly 30 regulars (don't forget kickers, punters, kick returners, punt returners, long snappers, holders and other special team personnel in addition to the 22 offensive and defensive starters) is least affected by an injury, although one to a quarterback can be significant. Hockey, where perhaps a dozen players see significant time, comes next in line, followed by baseball. Since only five players start and most teams rarely offer significant playing time to more than eight, basketball is the sport most impacted by injury.

VIII-THOU SHALT LEARN THE SIGNIFIGANCE OF THE HOME FIELD/COURT
Like Commandment VII, this varies from sport to sport. For example, a key ingredient in the NBA is not the home court, per se, but the travel associated with getting to that court. The home field can be a telling advantage in the NFL when weather is a factor. In hockey, the home team coach gets to make the last line change, creating the player personnel matchups he desires. The home field is less of an advantage in baseball where good pitching conquers everything.

IX-THOU SHALT WORSHIP AT THE SHRINE OF DEFENSE
Offense is flashier but the teams that played good defense (Patriots, Marlins, Spurs and Devils) all won championships last year. There will be exceptions, of course, but over the long haul, defense prevails.

X-THOU SHALT BE GRACIOUS AND HUMBLE IN VICTORY
It's never a good idea to risk angering Lady Luck.

Venus’ Wimbledon Ladies final result

Venus Williams became a 5 time Wimbledon Ladies Champion when she successfully beat her sister in straight sets 7-5 6-4 today.  Serena came into the match as slight favourite and showed that when she broke her older sister in the opening game.  Venus didn't break back until the 8th game to make it 4-4.  Venus went on to take a 6-5 lead and head towards a tie break.  Serena Williams netted the final point of the 1st set when at 30-40 to gift her sister the opening set.

Venus Williams

Serena looked frustrated at herself towards the end of the opening set and that continued throughout the match.  There was a strong wind throughout the contest that often delayed serves and affected shots.

A frustrated Serena Williams returned Venus' first serve up the baseline for a superb winner.  Serena went up to 0-30 in the opening game but Venus fought back to take the opening game of the 2nd set with a ladies Wimbledon record serve of 129mph.  Serena held on to her own serve before breaking Venus in the 3rd set for a 2-1 lead.  But Venus broke straight back.  Each sister held onto their own serve after that up to the 10th and final game where Venus took advantage of her 2nd match point when Serena ends the rally with a shot in the tramline.

Venus Williams celebration was quiet as always when one wins between the two and gave her younger sister a hug at the net.

Wimbledon final Tips

Tomorrow Roger Federer meets Rafael Nadal in their 3rd consecutive Wimbledon final, and their 2nd consecutive Grand Slam final.  Rafael Nadal thrashed Roger Federer at the French Open in Paris last month, 6-1 6-3 6-0.  But that was on clay, Nadal's favourite service, and Federer's least, being the only Grand Slam he has never won.  The Wimbledon final is on grass, Federer's favourite service and where he has put together an incredible 65 game unbeaten streak.  Rafael Nadal may have improved his grass court game, he may have won at Nottingham before this tournament, and he does look good out there.  But he only looks 2nd best.  2nd best to Roger Federer who, as ever, is on top of his game at these championships.

Roger Federer won the last 2 against Nadal in 4 and 5 sets respectively.  Tomorrow's game may well be 4 or 5 sets again, but it's going to be Federer who wins 3 of them.

Nadal knows and has admitted he will have to be at the top of his game to stand a chance.  But whatever he can do, Federer can do better.  Only Federer has not dropped a set at this years Championships and he has hardly had to break a sweat.

Roger Federer

Roger Federer's route to the final:
1. Dominik Hrbaty: 6-3 6-2 6-2
2. Robin Soderling: 6-3 6-4 7-6
3. Marc Gicquel: 6-3 6-3 6-1
4. Lleyton Hewitt: 7-6 6-2 6-4
Qtr: Mario Ancic: 6-1 7-5 6-4
Semi: Marat Safin: 6-3 7-6 6-4

Rafael Nadal's route to the final:
1. Andreas Beck: 6-4 6-4 7-6
2. Ernests Gulbis: 5-7 6-2 7-6 6-3
3. Nicolas Kiefer: 7-6 6-2 6-3
4. Mikhail Youzhny: 6-3 6-3 6-1
Qtr: Andy Murray: 6-3 6-2 6-4
Semi: Rainer Schuettler: 6-1 7-6 6-4

It is worth noting that Roger Federer looked more comfortable beating Marat Safin, who has been playing at his best in these championships, than Rafael Nadal looked beating a tired Rainer Schuettler.

Rafael Nadal also had footwork problems in that semi final match and his knee isn't at 100%.  You're not going to beat Roger Federer if you're not at 100%, and tomorrow Rafael Nadal will not beat Roger Federer.  Federer will lift his 6th straight Wimbledon Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Poker Rules of the Various Games

Each of the variants of poker has its own set of rules. In order to play well, you need to be very knowledgeable in poker rules as well as the jargon associated with the game. Since the two most popular poker games are Texas Hold'Em and Omaha, these are the games for which you should really learn the rules of the game.

Texas Hold'Em Rules

All games begin with a betting hand. Each player has to ante (or post a blind), which means they each have to place money in the pot before receiving any cards. Then players receive two cards each ace down so that the other players don't see what the others have. In casinos, the dealer is not one of the players, but in casual games players take turns being the dealer. The players look at the cards and the first round of betting begins. Players who feel they do not have a good combination of cards at this point will fold. As their turn comes, players can bet, call a player who has made a bet or raise the bet to a higher level.

After this first round of betting, the dealer discards the first card on the deck just in case someone accidentally saw the card and made a bet knowing what card would come next. The dealer then lays three cards face up in the middle of the table. This is called the flop. Then players bet on the combination of these cards and the ones they hold in their hands. Players can choose not to bet, but to stand on their current bet. This is called checking. Players can fold, call, raise or make a further bet in their turn.

The dealer discards another card and then lays a fourth card face up on the table. This is called the turn. Then a third round of betting begins. Then, the dealer adds a fifth card, called the river, in the same manner. This is the final round of betting in which players can use the combination of what they hold in their hands and the five cards on the table to make a winning hand. The players reveal their hands and the one with the best combination wins the pot.

Omaha Rules

Omaha is very similar to Texas Hold'Em except that instead of dealing to each player at the beginning, the dealer gives each one four cards. A player cannot use all of the cards dealt to the community, or the middle of the table. He/She must use two from their hand and three from the five on the table.

There are several variations of this poker game, such as high/low split. In high/low split, a player makes a separate five-card high combination using two of the cards in his/her hand and another five-card low combination from the other two cards. The low combination must be cards eight or lower. The pot is then split between the high and low hands, which must be the same player.

Serena v Venus part 7: Wimbledon final

Later today Serena and Venus Williams will battle it out on Centre Court for the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies Championship.

Both ladies have had a lot of success at Wimbledon and will partner up after the match for the Ladies Doubles final.  Venus is the current champion with Serena not having won the title since 2003 when she came from a set down to defeat her sister.

Both ladies have cruised to the final and have been by far the best 2 female competitors at this years competition.  They have met each other 15 times with Serena leading the series 8-7 and more importantly 5-1 in Grand Slam finals, the last being 5 years ago here at SW19.

Serena Williams got to the final by beating Kaia Kanepi 7-5 6-3 in round 1, Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-4 in round 2, convincingly beating 2006 Wimbledon Champion Amelie Mauresmo 7-6 6-1 in round 3, Bethanie Mattek in round 4 6-3 6-3 before thrashing promising Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4 6-0 in the quarter final and then defeating giant-killing Jie Zheng 6-2 7-6 in the semi final on Thursday.

Williams sistersBet at JAXX

Venus got here by beating Britain's Naomi Cavaday 7-6 6-1 and Anne Keothvong 7-6 6-2 in rounds 1 and 2 respectively before going on to beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1 7-5, Alia Kleybanova 6-3, 6-4 in round 4, Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4 6-3 in the quarter final and the disappointing Elena Dementieva 6-1 7-6 on Thursday.

Neither have dropped a set in this years Championships.

Despite Venus being the reigning champion, Serena goes into this match slight favourite.  Betfair are offering the best odds with Serena Williams 1.9 and Venus Williams 2.1 to win.  Betfair are also offering free £25 bets to new customers for the final 2 days of Wimbledon, so sign up now to take advantage on the penultimate day!

Good luck.

10/10 Tips correct/Wimbledon semi results

Roger Federer booked his place into his 6th consecutive Wimbledon final with a comfortable straight sets victory over Russia's Marat Safin.

Federer is now unbeaten in 65 consecutive matches on grass and goes into the final on Sunday as favourite.

The once brief world number 1 (Safin) was comfortably beat 6-3 in the first set by the current long-time world number 1.  It could have been embarrassing after that but Safin showed a lot of pride and took the 2nd set to a tie break which he lost 7-3.

Safin never looked in it after that and Federer duly took the 3rd and final set in 25 minutes, 6-4.

Federer goes into the final having not dropped a set so far in this Championship and is on course to take his 6th consecutive championship here.

Our Tennis Ace correctly predicted Roger Federer to win this match 3-0

Roger will meet Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final for a 3rd consecutive year.  Federer has won on both previous ocassions, in 4 and 5 sets consecutively.

Nadal also won his semi final with ease, although not as comfortably as Federer.  He cruised to a 6-1 first set lead and seemed to relax after that.  Rainer Schuettler broke early in the 2nd set and wasn't broken back until he was serving for the set at 5-4.  After that the set went into a tie break where Rafael Nadal took it 7-3.

Once he broke Rainer Schuettlers serve in the 3rd set and take a 2-1 lead there was no way back.  Rafael Nadal was a clear and deserved winner 6-1 7-6 6-4.

Our Tennis Ace correctly predicted Rafael Nadal to win this match 3-0

Roger Federer to make 6th Wimbledon final

Roger Federer as once-again cruised into the semi finals of Wimbledon, and only one-time doubles partner Marat Safin stands between him and a 6th consecutive Wimbledon final.  Last years champion is odds-on to meet last years finalist Rafael Nadal, whom Roger beat in 5 sets, 12 months ago.

Marat Safin beat Italy's Fabio Fognini in ronud 1 6-1 6-2 7-6, before knocking out the #3 seed Novak Djokovic in round 2 6-4 7-6 6-2  He dropped his first set beating up-and-coming Italian Andreas Seppi 7-6 3-6 7-6 6-4 in round 3.  In round 4 he defeated Swiss talent Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-1 and coming from behind to beat Feliciano Lopez 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-3 in the quarter finals.  He may have beaten some big names so far, but the road really does end here for Marat Safin.  Federer is above everybodies league in this sport and hasn't lost here for 6 years.  Safin is no match for Roger.

Roger Federer has yet to drop a set in this years competition, with only Robin Soderling and Lleyton Hewitt taking him to tie breaks (once each).  We don't expect those statistics to change tomorrow.

Roger Federer

These 2 have met 10 times in the past with Roger Federer leading the head-to-head 8-2, winning both games that were on grass (Halle 2005, Wimbledon 2007).  Roger Federer beat Marat Safin in straight sets last year and is likely to do the same again this year.
